How Many Players Are There In Hockey? [Fact Checked!]

Sharing is Caring

This is something that has been asked by many fans of the game over the years. Especially after the NHL went through a major realignment in 2018 and condensed the number of teams from six to four, home games became more scarce. Home games are important for building camaraderie and helping fans get to know each other, so it was a bit of a letdown for hockey fans everywhere when the season started and fewer teams had a chance to host a regular game.

Key Points To Keep In Mind When Calculating How Many Players Are In Hockey

When you’re counting how many players are in hockey, there are a few key points to keep in mind. First, experience. Obviously, you wouldn’t count a rookie as part of the overall player population. You also wouldn’t count a player who has been retired for a number of years. That being said, keep all experience levels in mind when making your count.

Also, consider the size of the respective teams. For example, the Montreal Canadiens have been around for a very long time. They’ve won a Stanley Cup, seven straight conference titles, and have frequently been ranked among the top four teams in the NHL. Statistically, the team is one of the largest in the league. For these reasons, it’s not uncommon for the Habs to have as many as 30 players on their roster at any one time. Even with the realignment and fewer teams, the Canadiens still have one of the biggest player bases.

In general, major sports franchises tend to have a very large player base. Though this can vary from year to year, it is not uncommon for a team to have over a dozen players who have either just finished their NCAA careers or are about to begin their senior year. This is also the case for the Minnesota Wild. The franchise began play in 1998 and they’ve made the playoffs 12 out of 14 seasons. The Wild also feature one of the largest player bases in the NHL. Not only do they have a lot of experience on their roster, but they’ve also stocked their farm system with quite a few promising youngsters. With the NHL expanding to 32 teams in the near future, the Wild will continue to have lots of players to pick from.

The Stanley Cup Is Back!

For the first time since the 2010/2011 season, teams that finished last in their respective divisions had a chance to taste victory. On April 13, the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs began, with all games being played on either the road or at home. Before the realignment, the last time a team from the Central Division won the Stanley Cup was back in 1939. Since the change, which was made prior to the 2018 season, no team has been able to win the Stanley Cup. Only three teams have made the finals since the season began, with all losing their respective series. The Washington Capitals were finally able to triumph this year, beating the Vegas Golden Knights in seven games.

It will be the fourth consecutive time that South Korea has hosted the event, with the country frequently being dubbed the โ€œhockey nationโ€ due to their large number of fans who follow the sport closely.
