There is a wide variety of scholarships available to students that play D1 hockey. Most of these scholarships require you to maintain a certain GPA or ACT score. Others are merit-based where the admissions officer reviews your application and decides which applicants will receive funds. The Bambino And Hob Nobbers Honors Scholarship
This program was started by Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr in honor of his brother, Bennie “Bambino” Orr. The two brothers share the same last name because their father, Dr. James “Jim” Orr, earned a PhD in Economics from Cornell University in 1928. With the advent of the electronic age, Dr. Orr became a prominent figure in academia because of his extensive knowledge in his field. One of the biggest honors a student can receive is to be named a Scholar-Bambino Orr after they complete their freshman year.
This scholarship pays for all of a student’s tuition, fees, room and board. Bambinos are required to play hockey during their sophomore year and carry a certain GPA or ACT score. Applications are accepted year round, but only a certain number of students will be chosen for funding each year. This program is typically awarded to students who have an interest in business or economics. Those who play D3, D2, or freshman hockey are eligible to apply.
The Brian Leetch NHL Alumni Association Scholarship For Undergraduates
This program was started by Boston Bruins legend Brian Leetch in 2018 in honor of his late father, Jack, who passed away a few days before Christmas. This award is given to undergraduate (bachelor’s degree seeking) students who play at least five varsity seasons of hockey for an NCAA Division I, II, or III school. The student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in marketing and/or business management. This award provides full tuition and fees as well as a monthly stipend.
The Butch Lambert Memorial Scholarship
Butch Lambert was a successful entrepreneur, sports marketing specialist, and amateur golf enthusiast who passed away in 2014 at the age of 76. The Butch Lambert Memorial Scholarship was created in his memory and provides support for post-graduate students who are pursuing a career in sports marketing or golf management. The student-athlete must be a full-time graduate student or have graduated with a masters degree in business administration, marketing, or a related field. They must also intend to pursue a career in sports management or marketing.
This award provides full tuition and fees at an ASU partner school. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA to be considered for this scholarship. This is a relatively new program and only a handful of students have benefited from this financial support.
The Dan Rooney Memorial Scholarship
This program was created in 2012 in memory of the late Pittsburgh Steelers owner and team captain Dan Rooney. The scholarship is awarded to post-graduate students who are pursuing a career in sports administration or marketing and support up to four children from a single-parent household. The student-athlete must be a full-time student and on-ice or on-campus athletic activities must be a focal point. The student must also intend to pursue a career in sports administration or marketing.
This is a relatively new program, and only a few students have benefited from this financial support.
The Dick Maxwell Scholarship
This program is named after its founder, Dick Maxwell, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 90. The Dick Maxwell Scholarship was created to provide financial support for students who want to study hospitality and the culinary arts. The student must have a demonstrated interest in food and beverage management. This award offers full academic and athletic support at an ASU partner school. Maxwell was an influential figure in the restaurant industry, as well as a philanthropist who was heavily involved with his community. He built one of the largest private collections of signed baseballs, which he donated to the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1998.
The Donald W. Reynolds Scholarship
This program is named in honor of former ASU hockey and football coach Donald “Don” Reynolds. The Donald W. Reynolds Scholarship provides support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in journalism. The student-athlete must be a full-time student and have at least a 3.0 GPA. They must also be enrolled in an accredited, degree-granting journalism school and demonstrate leadership qualities. In addition, they must have a demonstrated interest in sports journalism.
This program is relatively new but has already helped a number of ASU students pursue their careers in sports journalism.
The Dr. James “Jim” Orr Memorial Hockey Scholarship
This program was started by the Boston Bruins in honor of their legendary coach, Jim Orr. Known for his innovative, dynamic coaching techniques, Jim Orr is credited with creating the power play as we know it. The goal of this program is to provide financial support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in hockey coaching. The student-athlete must be a full-time student at an accredited college or university and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must also be prepared to attend a summer hockey camp and play in at least six games for an AAU or college hockey team. Finally, the student must have a genuine interest in coaching.
This is one of the most established and popular scholarships for hockey players. Many successful coaches, goaltenders, and players have benefited from this financial support.
The Frederick C. Mills Hockey Scholarship
This program is named after hockey legend, Frederick “Fritz” Mills, who passed away in 2016. He helped found the American Hockey League, an organization that is now more well-known as the American Hockey League. The American Hockey League has helped hundreds of young players make the transition from youth to professional hockey, and it continues to thrive because of Mills’ tireless work as a co-founder. The Frederick C. Mills Hockey Scholarship provides support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in hockey development. The student must be a full-time student at an accredited college or university and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, the student must be involved in community service and display an interest in the medical field.
This is one of the more specialized scholarships for hockey players. Students who receive this award must be passionate about hockey development and have a plan to pursue a career in hockey management or administration.
The Harry Jerome Scholarship (Hockey)
This program is named after the late Chicago Blackhawk player Harry “Hap” Jerome. Hap Jerome played 17 NHL seasons and was part of the inaugural class of the Hockey Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 93 and is currently the oldest living NHL player. The Harry Jerome Scholarship (Hockey) provides support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in hockey. The student-athlete must be a full-time student at an accredited college or university and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. He or she must also intend to pursue a career in hockey or physical education. This is one of the more prestigious scholarships for hockey players. All recipients must be American.
The Harry Jerome (Soccer)
This scholarship is also named after the late Chicago Blackhawk player Harry “Hap” Jerome, although it was originally established in honor of the hockey team. The Harry Jerome (Soccer) program provides support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in soccer. The student-athlete must be a full-time student at an accredited college or university and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. He or she must also intend to pursue a career in soccer. This is one of the more established and popular hockey scholarships. All recipients must be American.
The Howard G. Bayne Memorial Scholarship (Hockey)
This program is named after Howard G. Bayne, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 95. Howard Bayne was a prominent businessman and sportsman who was most well-known for his work with amateur hockey teams. He was both the president and CEO of the Bayne Corporation, a company that produced a diverse line of office equipment and supplies. In addition to his work with industry, Bayne was also an active philanthropist, donating more than a million dollars to a variety of charities and causes. He started the Howard G. Bayne Memorial Scholarship (Hockey) to provide support for undergraduate students who have a demonstrated interest in hockey. This program provides full tuition and fees as well as a monthly stipend. Preference is given to students who can play varsity hockey. Applications are accepted year round, but only a certain number of students will be chosen for funding each year.
