Do you want to know how much do hockey tickets cost? Hockey is back! After a break of a few years, the beloved game is making a comeback. Thanks to a number of new teams and an increased number of available seats, fans can now get their fill of stick-swinging action. But just how much do hockey tickets cost? Let’s take a look.

The Rise In Popularity

Hockey has always been a game that appeals to audiences across the country, but for some reason, it became less popular over the past few years. With the world’s biggest sport continuing to grow its audience, it’s no wonder that the NHL has decided to get back in the game. Through an expanded partnership with Ticketmaster, fans will now have the ability to purchase tickets to see their favorite teams play. The uptick in popularity is evident in several ways:

  • The NHL and its 31 teams have sold out their respective home games this season.
  • 15 of the league’s 30 teams have increased their average attendance by 1,000 or more this season.
  • Over the past two seasons, the Anaheim Ducks are the only team to have increased their win rate both years.
  • Three of the last four Stanley Cup champions were hockey teams: Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Calgary.
  • According to the National Hockey League, fans made around 167 million views on its various digital platforms (TV, radio, and online) during the 2019–20 season.
  • The 2020 Winter Olympics in Tokyo was the first to feature hockey as an exhibition sport. The event drew a potential audience of around one billion people.
  • There were around 5.5 million Americans that identified as hockey fans in 2018. That’s compared to 4.3 million fans in 2012 and 3.2 million in 2006. (Mark Mueller, “Hockey‘s popularity soars in the U.S.,” The New York Times, Dec. 4, 2019)
  • According to American Express, there were 125 million American Express Card members in 2019. That’s compared to 115.8 million in 2018 and 110.2 million in 2014. (Amex, 2019)
  • National Hockey League (NHL) team owners/operators have seen an 86% increase in value over the past three seasons.

The Cost Of A Hockey Ticket

While the cost of an individual game can vary widely, the cost of a hockey ticket usually does not. True, you may find cheaper options if you purchase them from another website, but these tickets won’t allow you to attend all the games. Also, the face value of these “discounted” tickets is usually not that great: they’re often more than 50% of the regular price. That being said, there are exceptions.
