How To Make A Hockey Puck Display Case? [Expert Review!]

Sharing is Caring

With the NHL season now underway, it’s time for you to start thinking about ways to celebrate your favourite hockey team. One way you can do this is with a hockey puck display case. You might be familiar with the cases used by sports stores and memorabilia collectors, but have you ever thought about making your own? With some creative glass painting and a whole lot of patience, you can craft a masterpiece that will serve as a keepsake of your favourite team’s season.

The Basics

A display case for your hockey puck will depend on a few factors. The first is size since you’ll need room to house the puck and any other items you want to include. The second factor is how you want to mount the case since there are many different ways to do this (on the wall, on a stand, etc.). Finally, since this is a glass painting project, you’ll need to consider how you’ll paint the interior.

The Materials

The materials you’ll need for this project include glass wool, paint, tape, paper towels, acetone, acrylic acid, newspaper, and a heat-resistant mat. As for the hockey puck, you can use any colour you want but it’s recommended that you use neutral colours such as white or cream to ensure that the colours of your game don’t fade away too quickly.

Puck Sizes

If you follow the instructions below, you’ll be able to make a hockey puck display case suitable for any size puck. The key is to ensure that the glass is thick enough to withstand the weight of the object inside.

The Steps

The following steps will guide you through the process of making a hockey puck display case. Make sure to take your time with each step and follow the instructions carefully so that you end up with a smooth and clean piece of art.

1. Begin By Cutting The Glass

This step is critical since you need to ensure that the glass is cut properly so that it fits snugly around the object you’re putting in it. If you cut the glass too large then the foam will show through which makes the piece look cheap.

2. Mix The Acetone And Alcohol

Now that you have your glass cut and ready, mix together equal parts of acetone and alcohol in a separate container. You must do this to ensure that the glass dries clear and doesn’t continue to absorb moisture from the air which could potentially cause it to break.

3. Dip The Glass In The Acetone/Alcohol Mixture

Dip one end of the glass in the mixture and leave to dry for about ten minutes. This step is important because it gives you some time to work on the other end without the mixture being too dry to handle. If the glass is not wet enough then when you pull it out, it will break and you’ll have to start again from scratch.

4. Test One Cut To See If It’s Suitable

Cutting a piece of glass is difficult enough but doing so on the thicker side can be even more challenging. For this reason, you must test the cut of one piece of glass to ensure it works for the size you need for your case. The reason for this is that if you use the wrong piece of glass then the entire project could become useless since the entire point is to use the correct one. If it works, cut the rest of the glass the same way and use masking tape to ensure that the pieces don’t dry out and become flammable while you work on mounting them on the wall or stand.

5. Paint The Inside Of The Glass

Take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the size of your glass so that it fits snugly inside. This is important so that the glass doesn’t move around while you work on mounting it on your wall or stand. To paint the interior of the glass, use a paintbrush and a small amount of black paint for the interior and a larger amount of white for the exterior. This will help keep the focus on the puck inside the glass instead of any masking tape you may use to hold it together. Once you have the inside painted, let it dry for about ten minutes before doing anything else.

6. Sand The Exterior Of The Glass For The Final Look

Once the interior of the glass is dry, you can sand the exterior to give it a smooth and even look. Take your time with this step so that you don’t have to keep starting over again due to excess wear on your sander.

7. Mount The Piece Of Glass On A Wall Or Stand

This step is critical since you must mount the glass on a solid surface such as a wall or stand so that it doesn’t move around while you work on it. To do this, simply use wood glue or double-sided tape and make sure to leave plenty of room around the edges so that when you’re done, it doesn’t look like you’re trying to hide any pieces of tape. Do this for both pieces of glass and leave them to dry for about ten minutes before proceeding.

8. Seal The Case

Once both pieces of glass are on your wall or stand, use plastic sealant to protect the walls and any other surfaces that you didn’t paint previously. Ensure to let this dry for about ten minutes before moving around with your case so that it doesn’t become unhinged in transit.

The Result

When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful display case for your hockey puck that serves as a wonderful conversation piece or decoration for your home.
