Sharing is Caring

I know what you are thinking. It’s that old classic, the hockey jersey, with the letters C-A-T spelled out in large, bold white text on the front and back. You are probably wondering how to sew captain letter on a hockey jersey. Well, I have wonderful news for you. It’s not as hard as you think. And before we begin, let’s establish one thing. This is not about being a “sewer of the year”. This is about having fun and wanting to make your hockey jersey stand out. Plus, if we are going to sew on a captain’s letter, let’s make it fun and add a little flair.

What Will I Need To Sew Captain Letter On Hockey Jersey?

If you are looking to sew captain letter on a hockey jersey, you will need to have the following items:

  • A sewing machine
  • An iron
  • Fabric (the thicker, the better)
  • An embroidery hoop
  • A needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • A hockey jersey
  • Some buttons
  • A cardboard tube
  • A printer
  • Envelopes

Step 1: Set Up The Machine.

Before you begin, make sure that your sewing machine is set up correctly. Check the manual or visit the website of the manufacturer to learn how to use your machine correctly. Some people prefer to use a zipper rather than a flat-seam when closing their jeans. So be sure that the machine is set up to accommodate this type of garment. You should also check that your needle is the right size for the garment you are making. In general, try to use larger sizes for thicker fabrics and smaller sizes for thin fabrics. This will help you create a clean and professional-looking finished product. To avoid any accidents, be sure that your sewing machine is unplugged and free of all cords before beginning any project.

Step 2: Determine The Size You Want.

Now that you have your machine ready, it’s time to determine the size you want for your captain’s letter. It’s a good idea to take a look at other jerseys with similar letters to get an idea of what size will look best on you. Once you determine the size you want, take a bit of cardboard or a paper towel and wrap it around the circumference of your hip to create a temporary mock-up. This mock-up will help you see how the letter will look when you are done and ensure that it fits comfortably on your body. After you are happy with the mock-up, take a quick trip to your local drugstore and pick up some dry-cleaner’s spray to give it that polished, professional look. Remember: the shinier the jersey, the more intimidating the captain!

Step 3: Cut Out The Letters.

Once you have your spray on, it’s time to cut out the letters. Start by cutting the top corner off of the cardboard to create a diamond shape. Then, using your sprayer, evenly coat the entire surface of the letter. Take your time doing this so that you create a thick, even coat all the way around the circumference of the letter. Once you have completed that, take a small brush and start going over the edges of the letter to make it look a bit more rustic. Do this in a few small areas so that it does not look like a complete brush-off. Finally, take a bit of tape and put a dot on each corner of the letter to hold it in place until you are ready to attach it to your jacket. Once you are done, remove all the tape and cardboard.

Step 4: Sew The Letters On The Jacket.

It’s time to start sewing! Unwind your needle and thread, grab your hockey jersey, and pull the collar up. Then, using your needle, start making small stitches on the front of the jersey near the collar. Once you have a couple of stitches, use your thread to make a small running stitch all the way down the front of the jacket. As you are pulling the thread, make sure that the jacket is not going to slip off your shoulder. If it does, stop and set it down before continuing. Once you have made the stitching, turn the collar up and continue to the other side. Using your needle, start making another row of stitching, this time closer to the collarbone. On the back collar, start with a few stitches and then continue in a straight line all the way to the bottom. Finally, take your needle and make one or two rows of stitching just below the collar. Make sure that these last two rows are almost imperceptible so that it looks like you were born with the jacket on. Do not make them too large or too small, as this will also affect the overall look of the jacket. Once you have completed this step, you may want to go over the stitching with a dry-cleaner’s spray to give it that polished, professional look.

Finished Product!

Once you have sewn on your Captain’s letter, it’s time to reveal your brilliant work. When you put on the jacket, it will be evident that you have some type of badge on your sweater proudly displaying your team’s logo or captain’s name. So, what do you think?
