Is A Hockey Jersey Called A Sweater? [Updated!]

Sharing is Caring

There’s a misconception among the general public that a hockey jersey is the same as a sweater. While the two garments share some commonalities and can be worn together, they are actually quite different in many ways.

What is a Hockey Jersey?

A hockey jersey is a short-sleeve, tight-fitting shirt or blouse in a red, white, and blue checkerboard pattern that was originally designed for hockey players to wear on the ice. It is named after the sport of hockey and has been around since the 1800s.

Often mistaken for a sweater, the hockey jersey is actually more formal and tailored than your average sweater. While there’s no exact measurements for a hockey jersey, we do know that most of the time, the height of the collar will reach or go above the top of the knickers (underwear) when the head is worn. This is usually an indicator that the overall height of the garment is more than enough to cover the buttocks. (For taller people, an additional inch or two can be added to the height of the collar.)

Different Colors

Most people associate the colors red, white, and blue with the American flag, but these three colors also make up the official colors of the National Hockey League (NHL). It follows that many individuals assume that the jerseys of the three major North American sports leagues โ€“ the NHL, MLB, and NBA โ€“ must be coordinated and match.

This is far from true. While the red, white, and blue colors may be used to represent the American flag and the three major sports leagues in the United States, the NHL uses a red and white checkerboard design with blue trim and the MLB uses a white, red, and blue checkered design with black trim. Interestingly, the NBA does not use a checkerboard design, but instead, a white jersey with red and blue trim.

Made Of Different Materials

Not only do the NHL, MLB, and NBA use different colors for their jerseys, but they are also made of different materials. The red, white, and blue color scheme is primarily made of polyester fibers and spandex, a stretchable and formfitting fiber. The collar of the hockey jersey is usually manufactured separately from the rest of the garment and is often stitched (overlapped) or otherwise connected to the body of the shirt or top with Velcro fasteners.

On the other hand, the white, red, and blue colors of the MLB are made of cotton and polyester blend while the white, red, and blue colors of the NHL are made of wool and polyester blend. The jerseys of the three sports leagues are, therefore, not only unique in color but are, also, thick and air-light in texture. (The texture of an item denotes the way it feels physically and can be perceived by the touch. Generally, thicker and more textured materials are considered to be more luxurious than thinner and more limless ones.)

More Formal

A traditional hockey jersey is a form-fitting top that hugs the body closely and accentuates the shapes of the female figures. This closely fitted top usually has a crew neckline, straight armholes, and functional (button) cuffs around the wrists. (Many people call the cuffs on the jersey โ€œstockingโ€ because they are often used to cover up the legs when the individual wearing the jersey walks or runs. This is more commonly referred to as โ€œknee-lengthsโ€ but can also be found above the knee.)

A hockey jersey is more formal than your average sweater because it accentuates and enhances the shapes of the female figure. It is also a short-sleeve, close-fitting top that accentuates the arms. Most people wear them without any accessories as they are generally considered to be a symbol of strength and confidence. (This shirt has mostly been worn by men since it was first designed for hockey players in the 1800s.)

In addition, most people who wear a hockey jersey do so comfortably since it is designed to be form fitting, making it somewhat warmer than an average sweater. If you feel chilled despite the temperature, then you might want to consider putting on a fleece pullover or a heavy sweater instead. Remember: the closer the fit, the less cold you will feel!

Design Elements

Many people think that all three sports league jerseys look alike since they are usually made of the same basic design elements, but this couldn’t be further from true! The design of each sports league jersey is quite unique and is, essentially, a representation of the league’s logo and colors. (The logo of a sports league is the symbol used to represent that league. Most logos are made up of a combination of letters and/or numbers that can represent a brand or company as well as a specific sport played by that company’s members.)

The jerseys of the three sports leagues use different letter and number combinations and have unique visual styles. Take a look at the logos of the NHL, MLB, and NBA and you will see three very distinct and, essentially, unique designs.

Variety Of Styles

Another important difference between a hockey jersey and your average sweater is the variety of styles available for the former. Like other clothing items, the style of a hockey jersey varies by the time of day, the occasion, and the outfit combination chosen by the individual wearing the jersey. (This is called โ€œaccessorizingโ€ and can be done by adding matching jewelry or seasonal fashion objects, like pumpkin headmalls and bobble-head dolls.)

However, the variety of styles for a hockey jersey far surpasses that of your average sweater. This arises mainly from the fact that most people who wear a hockey jersey do so only in specific occasions and only add additional accessories when wearing them. There are also several ways in which you can style the hockey jersey depending on the occasion and the outfit combination chosen by the wearer.

Often, individuals who wear a hockey jersey do so at formal occasions like weddings and proms. These are usually associated with old money, old families, and/or old lifestyles. In these situations, the shirt is worn with a tie, vest, or blazer. When worn alone, the tie and blazer complete the outfit while the vest adds a finishing touch of formality. (A wedding/prom outfit combination frequently involves the groom’s shirt, which is usually white or light colored, and the maid of honor’s dress, which is usually red or dark colored. The colors stand for the two weddings or proms that will take place on the same night. This is an informal and comfortable way to wear a hockey jersey as long as the occasion is not too formal.)

Other times, individuals choose to wear a hockey jersey at more casual events like birthday parties, Thanksgiving dinners, and day-out shopping trips with their friends. In these situations, the shirt is often worn with a sweater, cardigan, or blazer to add a little more warmth. In the winter, a leather jacket is typically worn with the shirt to complete the outfit.

The way you style a hockey jersey depends on the occasion, but also on the outfit combination chosen by the individual wearing the shirt. There are several ways to style the shirt (collar up or down, tucked in or out, etc.), and the same is true for the tie (collar up or down, tucked in or out, etc.). The vest and the jacket can also be worn with this shirt depending on the occasion and the outfit combination chosen by the individual wearing the shirt. (This is why it’s important to keep a record of the occasions and outfit combinations in which you wear your shirts. This way, you will know how and when to style them. This way, you will make the most of the temperature and feel comfortable even when the occasion is formal.)

Other Types Of Sweaters

Many different kinds of sweaters exist beyond the simple โ€œsportโ€ or โ€œfashionโ€ type. Some are worn for specific purposes while others are simply enjoyed for their own aesthetic beauty. (There are also โ€œhygieneโ€ sweaters which are worn by people who clean fish tanks and the like.) Some people also wear a camisole with their sweaters as a way to add a little more coverage while others prefer baggy sweaters with no shirt underneath to show off their muscles.

Whether or not you wear a hockey jersey and, if you do, the style and formality level of your outfit will determine the overall feel and effect you achieve. There are several unique ways to wear and style the shirt, and similar for the vest and the jacket. Keep track of when, where, and why you wear them so you can make the most of this elegant and historical garment.
