Field hockey has always been considered a sport for the wealthy. The game was first played in London in 1875 and then popularized in the United States in the early 1900s. It was initially played on large private property with fields that were large enough for the players to run around in. The game was considered fashionable and it was played by women during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The most popular player during this time was also the daughter of a wealthy industrialist โ Nellie Melville. Unfortunately, the sport declined in popularity after this time and it fell out of fashion. Today, it is played mostly as a recreation sport by those who can afford to pay for the game.

Why Did The Sport Become Popular In The US?
The United States is home to some of the most iconic sports teams and sports figures. One of the most popular sports in the country is undoubtedly football. However, it was American field hockey players that established the sport on the other side of the ocean. The first organized American hockey team was the Baltimore Club, which was established in 1898. Two years later, the Baltimore Club merged with the Boston University Beavers and the combined team became the most popular one in the country. American hockey quickly became popular because of the country’s discovery of the sport.
The sport was first played in England in 1875 and it was initially considered a demonstration sport. It was not until the early 1900s that hockey started to become a competitive sport. The most popular British hockey player of this time was Monty Wooley. He is credited with bringing hockey to a large population of people in the United Kingdom. It was also during this time when British hockey players were setting the standards for the game. One of the most prominent English players at the turn of the century was Frank Morley. He served as the secretary of the British Hockey Association from 1900 to 1914 and he laid the foundations for the sport in the UK. This is also when the British Empire began expanding and gaining more territories. One of the first competitions that the British Hockey Association organized was the Canada Gold Cup in 1903. This is when hockey truly started becoming a global game. Several famous hockey players from that time have gone on to have legendary careers, including Lionel Conacher, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Even today, people in Canada still celebrate their country’s hockey heritage, which is evident by the fact that the sport is still very popular in areas such as northern Ontario.
The Rise Of American Hockey
The first American professional hockey team was the Chicago Millionaires, which was established in 1899 and renamed the Chicago Black Hawks in 1930. Several other teams across the country also started playing hockey during this time. However, it was not until the early 1900s that the sport started becoming popular in the United States. The most significant factor behind this is that Americans began to see hockey as a form of patriotic duty. Several prominent Americans, such as the Rockefellers, the Fords, and the Mellvilles, all played a significant role in encouraging people to learn the sport. The most prominent hockey player of this time is believed to be Frank Atherton. He was a famous Harvard University hockey player and he helped organize recreational hockey in the United States. It was also Atherton who introduced the sport of ice hockey to Canada in 1911. The introduction of hockey in Canada helped spur its popularity and established it as a true popular sport. People in all parts of the country started playing hockey, which helped to create a sense of nationalism in the country. Even today, hockey is one of the most popular sports in Canada.
The first hockey arena in the United States was the Boston Arena, which opened its doors for the winter of 1910-11. It was then that Americans truly started embracing the sport. The arena was the centerpiece of a larger complex that also included a swimming pool and a skating rink. The Boston Arena was an architectural wonder, featuring a steel skeleton that allowed the interior to be reconfigured, should the facility undergo renovations.
Hockey Becomes Global
The early 1900s was a significant time for hockey. It saw the development of new hockey arenas, the introduction of the game to Canada and the US, and the emergence of many professional teams. The new arenas that were built at the time were magnificent creations that stood as a testament to the sport’s growing popularity. Unfortunately, the time was not entirely positive. The decade of the 1900s was also marked by the introduction of professional baseball and American football, which took some of the attention away from hockey. Still, the decade saw many new arenas being built and many professional hockey teams emerging. The sport truly became global during this time. New teams were formed in places such as Prague, Czechoslovakia and Warsaw, Poland. Several famous hockey players also emerged during this time, including Broncho Billy Anderson and Joe Hall. He was a hockey pioneer, playing for ten different teams over the course of his career. Hall was also the owner and president of the Detroit Hockey Club, which began play in the National Hockey League in 1899. It was during this time when the concept of international hockey was first established. Teams from Canada, the United States, and other English-speaking countries visited Europe regularly and participated in international competitions. This saw the sport travel across continents and it became a truly global game.
The first official international match was held in March 1914. It was a three-game series between Poland and Germany and it pitted the hockey superstitions of the German people against the sporting brilliance of the Poles. Poland won the first game 1-0, but the second and third games were drawn 1-1. Still, the series was a success and the entire country of Germany began embracing the game. Even today, Poland is known for its love of hockey and the entire country celebrates their team’s victories with elaborate parties and festivals.
The first World Hockey Championship was held in Cologne, Germany in 1922. Several other tournaments were subsequently held in various cities around the world. The championship continues to this day, with the 2018 edition being held in Paris.
The last few years have seen a resurgence in interest in field hockey globally. Several countries, including Germany, have reestablished their teams and started competing regularly. Still, Canada and the United States remain the two biggest markets for the sport. If you’re a fan of hockey, you’re sure to find an international tournament somewhere near you.
