Why Do Hockey Players Spit So Much? [Updated!]

Spitting, for those unaware, is the physical action of passing one’s saliva from the mouth to the nose or to the ground. Essentially, it is a socially acceptable way of expelling bad energy out of one’s body, much like a burp or a sigh. What is uncommon is the amount of saliva that professional ice hockey players produce. For example, an average NHL player will swallow about six to eight tablespoons of liquid during a game. This is in direct contrast to the average person, who swallows only two to three. Indeed, some players have been known to drink more than 20 ounces of liquid during a game. This is not an uncommon occurrence during a hockey game; in fact, it is rather routine.

Why do hockey players spit so much? It is not entirely clear, but there are a couple of plausible explanations. First, and most obvious, is that hockey players are athletic individuals and need to hydrate frequently. This, along with the physical nature of their sport, undoubtedly contributes to their need to spit large amounts. Second, and perhaps more likely, is that players need to clear their mouth of excess food before speaking or playing. As mentioned before, eating while playing is prohibited, and anything in the mouth potentially hampers a player’s performance. Third, and possibly related, is that the continuous formation and dissolution of facial muscles during play might also cause spits. This, in turn, could lead to a player suffering from dry mouth, which is uncomfortable and might even affect their game. For these three reasons, and presumably many more, hockey players need to spit frequently.

Why Is It Important To Hydrate Frequently?

Although it might come as a surprise to learn that players need to stay hydrated, it is crucial for their well-being. After all, excessive drinking can lead to severe dehydration, which, in turn, can cause a variety of problems. For instance, a dehydrated hockey player might struggle to perform at their best, or even suffer injuries. More seriously, extreme dehydration can even lead to death. This is why it is so important for athletes to stay properly hydrated, especially in hot and humid climates. In addition to this, frequent drinking is also important for maintaining a proper salt balance in the body. Hence, staying hydrated is not only crucial for a player’s health, but it also helps keep them in the game.

What about injuries? Let’s be honestโ€”hockey is a physically demanding sport, and it is entirely possible, even likely, that some players will suffer injuries throughout their career. These injuries might cause them to miss games or even lead to significant time off. When this happens, their athletic performance and overall well-being are likely to decline. In an effort to avoid this, and given that they are physically active individuals, it would be wise for hockey players to drink plenty of water. This should not come as a great surprise; after all, they already know how important it is to stay hydrated in other sports. If they are serious about keeping their bodies in good condition, they ought to be drinking enough to stay properly hydrated in their sport. If this means they have to spit even more to do so, then so be it.

Is Swallowing More Than Necessary?

One of the most significant differences between the average person and a hockey player is that the latter has to frequently swallow. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, and to an extent it is a positive reflection of their superior hydration abilities. However, excessive swallowing can lead to health problems, especially if done in excess. This is why it is important for players to learn to control their swallowing. Indeed, too much swallowing during a meal, for example, can lead to an upset stomach, which is not at all pleasant, especially when playing or engaged in a physical activity. So, while frequent swallowing is undoubtedly a good thing, it must be controlled; it should not be done at the expense of others, such as when sharing food with friends and family members.

How Is Snorting Related To The Issue?

As mentioned before, players are athletic individuals and need to stay hydrated. This, along with the strenuous nature of their sport, undoubtedly contributes to their need to spit. One of the best ways of staying hydrated is by snorting, which is the act of forcefully ejecting air from the nose. This causes moisture to condense inside the nose, thus providing a quick and easy way to rehydrate. It is also important to note that, when properly done, snorting can help improve the appetite of those who do it. In fact, some people have reported that smelling certain odors, such as food, can trigger craving sensations. So, while snorting certainly has its place, it should be used in moderation. More importantly, those who do it professionally should be aware of the risks associated with the practice. Mouth breathing is also detrimental to the condition of the teeth and the gums, which could lead to serious medical complications. For these reasons, and presumably many more, snorting is best done when rehydrating or in response to a strong smell, such as that of food or medicine.

The bottom line is this: while players are certainly an excellent source of inspiration, they must also be careful about what they put in their bodies. Too much sugar and alcohol, for example, can cause serious problems. In addition to this, those who play sports should be aware of the risks associated with dehydration and overheating. In some rare cases, these problems can lead to death. Hence, it is imperative that players be careful about what they eat and drink, especially in hot and humid climates. Finally, while snorting does provide an easy way to rehydrate, it should be done in moderation and only when necessary. This is especially important for athletes who play contact sports.
